Good Traits, Bad Traits, and ‘Ugly’ Behavior: Relations between the Dark Triad, Honesty-Humility, Other HEXACO Personality Traits, and Externalizing Problems in Adolescents

Abstract The present study investigated the relative contributions of Dark Triad, honesty-humility, and other HEXACO traits to externalizing problems in young people. One-hundred-and-six adolescents aged between 12 18 years completed an online survey containing Dirty Dozen for Youth as index Triad psychopathy, Machiavellianism, narcissism, HEXACO-Middle School Inventory assess honesty-humility well five basic personality factors, Self-Report measure symptoms oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD) conduct (CD). Results first all showed that were positively correlated with ODD CD, while factor was negatively such symptoms. Further, both types associated a unique set correlates. More precisely, predicted by higher psychopathy lower agreeableness extraversion, CD (and some extent Machiavellianism) emotionality. It is concluded role temperament should take broad perspective includes malevolent benevolent from various theoretical models.
